EPDM vs Firestone vs Torch-On: Which Flat Roof System Is Best?

28 April 20265 min read

Choosing between flat roofing systems comes down to budget, lifespan and the shape of your roof. Here's how the three most common options compare in real-world use on homes across Berkshire and London.

Firestone RubberCover is a single-ply EPDM membrane glued to the deck — clean, seamless on smaller roofs and backed by a long manufacturer warranty. It's our go-to for garages, extensions and dormers up to around 40 m², and very popular on Victorian terraces in West London.

Fleeceback rubber is a heavier-duty EPDM with a fleece backing that bonds mechanically — ideal for larger or more complex roofs where extra strength and puncture resistance matter, including the larger flat-roofed extensions we see across Berkshire.

3-layer torch-on felt remains a strong, proven option for commercial roofs and properties with awkward upstands or detail work. It's heat-welded for a fully bonded finish and stands up well to foot traffic.
